Editor's Note: The 2015 China Rendez-Vous
The longest journeys always teach you the most. Not exactly a Confucian classic but a resonating sentiment nonetheless. Though long the journey was, the trip to Sanya, Hainan was a fantastic insight into a whole new world of luxury consumerism.
Two years ago I began to wax lyrical about the Chinese market. I hoped - along with many others - that this was to be the most entertaining market for years to come; however, while I may have been a big fan of the potential back then, I went back out to see if I was right.
The potential is still there, but my main concern last year held true. This is a fight of cultural perseverance, of an education in Western luxury culture and a battle of the brands.
Chinese high net worths aren’t buying superyachts, but given the younger generation of wealth is spending time exploring, studying far afield and achieving more than ever before, superyachts will become a part of the Chinese culture.
I’m not exactly the most patient person and I have a penchant for a sweeping generalisation or two, so two years ago I was wrong to say this was the next market; however I was right to return and see for myself how rapidly things are changing. Yachting will eventually become a pastime in China, and luxury is moving fast at both the show and mainland China itself.
Governmental concerns such as spending becoming an anti-corruption red flag or the general want to promote yachting, combined with a reticence to do so, isn’t exactly helping but it won’t stand in the way of future generations completely turning the game around.
The 2015 China Rendez-Vous was a fantastic experience on the whole - even with a series of delayed flights and creative airport past times to while away the many, many hours of travel - and this show taught me that the right things are happening here (just like the show itself) so sit back and try to be there for when it all clicks into place.
Anyhow, we have a lot of interviews coming your way. So if you don't believe me, you can see the picture we're building of the overall Chinese market for yourself.
